INTERNATIONAL LAW SUMMIT, 2018

The 9th Government Law College International Law Summit, held from 9th March to 11th March 2018, was a landmark event focusing on the theme of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). This Summit brought together legal scholars, practitioners, and students from around the globe to discuss and explore the pressing issues and developments in IHL.

What is International Humanitarian Law?

International Humanitarian Law, often referred to as the law of war or the law of armed conflict, is a set of rules that seek to limit the effects of armed conflict for humanitarian reasons. It protects those who are not or no longer participating in hostilities and restricts the means and methods of warfare.

Highlights of the Summit

The Summit featured various panels with experts from the leading universities. Key discussions included the application of IHL in contemporary conflicts, the challenges of enforcing IHL, and the role of international courts and tribunals.

The Judgment Deliberation Competition (JDC)©, the novel competition conceptualised within the portals of our institution, shone brightly, captivating participants and showcasing their exceptional legal acumen. The wide-ranging lectures, panel discussions, and competitions undoubtedly proved to be an enriching experience. It stands as a testament to the seemingly endless territory of international law and caters to pertinent issues of the day.

The Treaty Appreciation Competition (TAC) is a cornerstone of the Summit, encouraging participants to engage deeply with international treaties and legislative documents. This year's TAC challenged participants to critically evaluate and appraise the legality, consistency, and rationality of treaties relevant to humanitarian law. Teams representing various member states scrutinised the competition module, which included comprehensive legislation or amendments. They presented their critiques and proposed alterations, deletions, or additions, fostering a robust understanding of treaty law and its practical implications in the realm of international humanitarian efforts.

We, at SPIL, extended our heartfelt gratitude to all the attendees, including students, revered professors, and esteemed members of the legal community, who contributed to the resounding success of the Summit. Their unwavering support and unwavering passion fueled our journey and invigorated our pursuit of excellence.
